about

Graupner and Bach
Two baroque composers: one known to most music lovers at most by
name; the other the undisputed Number One in the canon of western classical music. Both endowed the keyboard generously with
compositions, and in that genre, for both composers, the dance suite was
an important starting point. Even though Christoph Graupner and Johann
Sebastian Bach were contemporaries, their treatment of the dance suite is quite different. Each one's personal style comes clearly into its own when we compare their partitas (suites of then-current dances). On this double CD, partitas by Bach and Graupner sound in a brotherly way, both side by side and face to face.
Entire bookcases could be filled with the literature on J.S. Bach and his music, but not a single monograph has yet been written on Christoph Graupner (Kirchberg, January 13, 1683 - Darmstadt, May 10, 1760). And yet this German baroque composer was during his lifetime as famous or even more so than his brilliant contemporary. For much of his life he worked as Kapellmeister, court music director, for the Landgraves of Darmstadt. There he composed an enormous body of work, which is far from being fully explored, though interest in Graupner is growing.
