I met director Giuseppe Gigliorosso in 2009. Our meeting was a long and pleasant conversation, we talked about cinema, theater, the difficulties of support ourselves in the contradictory and intricate Italian art scene. Empathy was mutual and immediate. I remember that a few days later I received a phone call from him, very welcomed: he just wanted to tell me how nice it was to listen to some of my music.
Through the following two years I didn't hear from him but suddenly in May 2011 I received a phone call. He asked me point blank to write the soundtrack for Ore Diciotto In Punto.
It was my first time in composing a complete original soundtrack but had a good experience with stage music for the theater, for years I composed "soundtracks for the theater". I had always worked in close contact with directors by attending rehearsals and discussing their directorial choices. Obviously I have always experienced very different situations, all directors are different with a different humanity, with different abilities and it hasn't always been a bed of roses even though in the end I think I've always been satisfied with the final work.
I wrote the first notes of the soundtrack, what later became one of the two main themes. There was the urgency to write a piece for solo piano as one of the protagonists is a pianist and one scene involved him playing a recognizable piece of the soundtrack on the piano. Thus Nicola’s theme was born, under the August 2011 scorching sun.
Since the piano is physically an element very present in the film it is obvious that even in the soundtrack it deserved a prominent role. I decided that the music would be scored among pieces for solo piano, cello and piano and string orchestra. Since I am a pianist, as well as a composer, I have recorded all the piano parts of the soundtrack myself. I also have a friendship with one of the best worldwide cellists, Giovanni Sollima. Giovanni has always been aware of my work and he knew about Ore Diciotto in Punto. It was therefore he himself who proposed to join the performance of a part of the music. We were able to find a favorable day to record and, in a hurry, I set to work. Thus, in February 2012, the other two "musical portraits" were born: Paride and Stella, which, along with the pre-existing Nicola (rewritten in a new version for cello and piano), I played and recorded with Giovanni. The level of performance had necessarily to remain high, consequently the choice of stringed instruments was "naturally" placed on a group as first-rated as GliArchiEnsemble, an extraordinary internationally renowned ensemble based in Palermo. I composed then the rest of the soundtrack for GliArchiEnsemble and eventually a song on the theme of Stella with lyrics by Valentina Gebbia. Another source of pride is the presence of the singer Oriana Civile who gave an intense interpretation of the Stella’s Song together with GliArchiEnsemble. I cannot avoid mentioning two very important presences that have contributed in a fundamental way: Maurizio Curcio, sound engineer who edited and mixed the film version and Valeria Di Matteo, my personal advisor with infallible instinct.
